How to pull useful keywords out of a job description
A short method to find the skill and tool terms that matter — and place them next to proof instead of stuffing them.
Updated 2026-08-03
The useful “keywords” on a resume are usually boring nouns from the posting: tools, systems, certifications, and role-specific skills. Soft adjectives rarely move a screen. Proof does.
What to highlight in the posting
- Hard skills and tools under requirements
- Phrases that repeat in the responsibilities section
- Exact product or compliance names you’ve used
- Culture words you can’t demonstrate — leave them out
A ten-minute extraction pass
Highlight skill-like nouns. Deduplicate. Cross off anything you’ve never done. Most applications land on roughly eight to fifteen terms — that’s your budget for this job, not a license to list forty.

Skills section: a short, honest list. Experience bullets: the same terms inside stories. Summary: at most a couple of role-aligned phrases. If a term is on the page, you should be ready to talk about it.
